Over the past decade, television consumption in Portugal has become progressively more fragmented. Pay TV has been consolidating its relevance, while other forms of content consumption have been gaining ground consistently. Although generalist channels continue to play a central role, audience attention is now distributed across an increasingly diversified ecosystem, reflecting the transformation of consumption habits and the growing multiplicity of channels, platforms and formats.
Evolution of Audience Share
The evolution of share makes this transformation particularly clear: Pay TV has strengthened its weight over the period and remains clearly above the other segments, while the “Others” category has recorded significant growth and is progressively approaching the main generalist channels. This category may include same-day time-shifted viewing, consumption of non-audited channels and other uses, such as access to streaming services. Conversely, SIC, TVI and RTP1 now show lower shares than those observed at the beginning of the series, reflecting a gradual redistribution of audiences and a lower concentration of television consumption.
